Did you recently notice a layer of white film in your mouth? Initially, you might grab your toothbrush in an attempt to get it off and get rid of the bad taste in your mouth, wondering what it is and how you can stop it the entire time. If this sounds all too familiar, then keep reading to learn about oral thrush.

What Is Oral Thrush?

Usually, fungus in your mouth is managed by other bacteria. Sometimes, however, it grows out of control, resulting in a condition called oral thrush. In addition to creating a layer of white, sticky film along your tongue, it can result in an unpleasant odor on your breath and in your mouth. Worse, the infection can spread to other parts of your body if you postpone treatment for too long. So, the moment you notice that your tongue isn’t a healthy pink color like it normally is, get in touch with your dentist.

What Causes Oral Thrush?

The infection is often the result of changes to your immune system, which allows the yeast to progress. Current research points to the below factors playing a role in the development of this condition:

  • Chronic stress
  • HIV
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Dry mouth
  • Hormonal changes from pregnancy
  • Inconsistent or lack of oral hygiene

How Can You Stop Oral Thrush?

Don’t worry – your dentist can help you stop oral thrush. In addition to cleaning your teeth, gums, and tongue, they can prescribe you an antifungal medication. The next step will be to talk to your primary care physician about any chronic health issues you have, like HIV or diabetes.

When it comes to prevention, there are a few best practices to implement:

  • Limit foods and beverages that contain yeast, like beer and bread.
  • Implement a solid oral hygiene routine, including brushing twice a day and flossing daily.
  • Visit your dentist every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning.
  • Be mindful of how much you use antibacterial mouthwashes (using them too much can throw off the balance of bacteria in your mouth).

A white layer of film on your tongue can negatively impact your confidence, your breath, and your overall health. So, don’t wait to schedule an appointment with your dentist to discuss your treatment options!
